12 Tips for Making a Fire in the Wood Stove & How to Operate Your Wood Stove More Efficiently 
  1. Use only dry, seasoned wood. Fuel should sound hollow.
  2. You will find wood in the stove.
  3. Take a moment to manage the wood.
  4. Remove larger pieces of wood to add later.
  5. Arrange smaller pieces of wood kindling in a pyramid.
  6. Place firestarter where its flame will ignite kindling. 
  7. Open the stove door a little as the fire takes. 
  8. Be aware of the damper: pull it open to bring air up through the chimney.
  9. Be prepared to open the front door if smoke backs into the living room.
  10. Get a little blaze going to heat the stove.
  11. Add larger, seasoned wood logs.
  12. Burn only dry wood, not trash or paper.
